North America

The nursing profession in the US continues to face shortages due to lack of educators, high turnover, and inequitable distribution of the workforce. It is estimated that upwards of one million additional nurses will be needed by 2020. Nursing shortage varies greatly depending on the region, with some regions having a surplus of nurses and lower growth potential, while other areas struggle to fulfill the basic needs of the local population as a whole. Nurses face common barriers such as gender bias when pursuing professional advancement, and are under-represented in leadership, only making up 25 percent of leadership roles or less. High numbers of nurses also experience burnout and leave the profession.
