Building a Supportive and Enabling Environment for Enhancing the Competency of Midwives

SOWMY Philippines Country Profile

Midwives in the Philippines play a very crucial role in providing maternal and newborn services—however access to quality health services is limited due to the inequitable distribution of public health midwives. Rural midwives are often overworked, consequently affecting quality of health service delivery. The ability of midwives to provide quality care is also hampered by the lack of training following their license acquisition. While they are required to attend Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for license renewal, most midwives could not comply due to their workload, the costly fees, and the unavailability of accredited CPD centers and learning platforms. CHWI has partnered with Save the Children to address these challenges by focusing on enhancing the competency of midwives, while improving workload support they receive from community health workers and creating an enabling environment for CPD through policy support.
