An Intercultural Approach to Sexual and Reproductive Education and Healthcare

SOWMY Chile Country Profile

More than half of Chile’s indigenous population falls within the country’s lowest income, and many reside in the Araucanía region. Many Indigenous people tend to only access health centers once a disease—oftentimes preventable—is well advanced. The region also has alarming early pregnancy rates (largely due to lack of sexual education) and the highest infant mortality rate in the country. The Center has partnered with Desafío and the Department of Public Health to design a professional training program that engages healthcare providers, including nurses and professional midwives, and educators to work directly with young people, improving access to and availability of comprehensive, quality sexual and reproductive health education, as well as pregnancy prevention and newborn care.
